Controlled burn sparks house fire in Fond du Lac County, leaving two without a home

METOMEN, Wis. (WFRV) – A controlled burn in Fond du Lac County led to a devastating house fire on Thursday afternoon, leaving two people without a home.

According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 3 p.m. to a fully engulfed residence on the W13000 block of Highway 44 in the town of Metomen, about 30 minutes west of Fond du Lac.

Upon arrival, deputies found the west side of the home consumed by flames. They entered the residence to ensure no one was inside and later confirmed the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Firefighters from the Brandon-Fairwater Fire Department arrived on the scene and extinguished the blaze, but the structure suffered extensive damage.

A preliminary investigation determined that the fire began as a controlled burn in a nearby ditch, which spread through the lawn and ultimately ignited the house.

No injuries were reported, but the home is considered a total loss. Authorities have not released additional details at this time.
