Eighteen-year-old Kyle Erpelding of Cary, Illinois, was operating the aircraft as a flight student when the plane began experiencing issues. Forty-two-year-old Benjamin Wesoloski, also of Cary, Illinois, was the passenger and flight instructor. He took control of the aircraft after identifying the emergency.

Wesoloski communicated with air traffic control and located the Boscobel Airport for an emergency landing. During the landing, the aircraft lost power, and oil obscured their view, causing the plane to bounce several times.

The aircraft’s landing gear collapsed, and the plane veered off the runway. The fuel tank ruptured, leaking fuel as the plane came to a stop.

Neither Erpelding nor Wesoloski was injured in the crash.
